THE RISING SUN CAFE' WILL HOST AN ARTIST'S RECEPTION WEDS, NOVEMBER 19, 2008 from 5-7 pm
The Rising Sun Cafe', located at 10 S. Main Street, will host an Artist's Reception on Weds., November 19, 2008 from 5-7 pm. for four local artists.
Diane Becker is a portrait artist and teacher who graduated from the School of Fine Art at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and relocated to Florida nearly 30 years ago. She taught at PHCC and the Enrichment Center for many years while building a following of private students, now teaching out of a studio in her home. She works primarily in oils to achieve a striking likeness of her subject , appreciating the subtle differences that set each personality apart. She is well known for her mural "EARLY PHYSICIANS OF DOWNTOWN BROOKVILLE" and has participated in many local art shows, garnering awards for her outstanding realism.
Joe Galletta has been practicing photography for over 15 years. He began converting his photo images to paintings in 2006 using Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. His canvas is a Wacom tablet, his brush a stylus, and his paint, the ink from an Epson printer. He has exhibited in many venues including Brooksville City Hall , the Spring Hill Art League's Annual Fall Harvest of Art and through the Photographic Society of America in Baltimore, MD,earning many awards and honorable mentions locally and nationally. Joe is a member of the Spring Hill Art League, the Spring Hill Camera Club, and the Photographic Society of America.
Paul Shaskan is a talented artist with a passion for bold color. He states "color evokes emotion". Paul wants each painting to make a strong color statement, and if possible, at the same time evoke a mood or elicit an emotional response in the viewer. He works primarily in oils, painting many of the places he has visited in his travels. His unique style consists of a mix of Impressionism, Expressionism and Primitive representational landscapes and seascapes. He is the Chair Extraordinaire for the Spring Hill Art League's Fall Harvest of Art and works tirelessly to promote the League and the talents of local artists.
Valdora Ward is a self-taught local wildlife artist. She enjoys painting on many different surfaces, such as gourds, blankets, and umbrellas, but perhaps her most unique talent is handpainting on feathers. Her unique feathers are highly sought after, each one of a kind , often finished with beading and glitter. She has art work in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Germany, France, Japan and Austraila, Canada, as well as nationwide. She has been a member of the Spring Hill Art League for over 10 years and tirelessly volunteers her facepainting talents at the Harvest of Art each year.

TASTE OF JAZZ...NOVEMBER 1st AND 2nd
Custom Countdowns & MySpace Layouts
Brooksville, FL, October 13, 2008 – The Hernando County Fine Arts Council announces a new opportunity for local musicians at this year’s A Taste of Jazz! Festival. The second annual festival will be held November 1st, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, and November 2nd, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm at Weeki Wachee Springs.
The festival, which attracted more than 4,000 attendees last year, features a great line-up of Florida jazz musicians, the best “tastes” from a variety of Hernando County Restaurants, a wearable-arts and fine crafts zone featuring regional artisans and a great line-up of children’s activities.
The new entertainment stage, one of three during the event, will be billed as the “Highlight on Hernando” stage. Organizers are looking for Hernando County’s hidden jazz talent. Time slots available are only one-half hour each. Musicians may play the entire time or just a few numbers. Solos, duos, trios, students, teachers, retirees and recreational players are all welcome, as long as the music is jazz. All instruments, including vocals are welcome, as long as the sound is jazz. Times available are from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm on Saturday and 10:00 am until 2:30 pm on Sunday.
General admission to the event is just $4 and includes all standard Weeki Wachee Springs activities in addition to all festival happenings. This year’s festival planners from the Hernando County Fine Arts Council and the Hernando Jazz Society hope to attract jazz lovers by presenting a wide-ranging slate of talented jazz artists. In addition to event headliners, Tampa’s own Late Night Brass and smooth guitar jazz artists, The Robert Harris Group, expect to hear regional favorites such as the Allan Breithaupt Trio, Southern Exposure, Matt Cucinotto, Estrellas Inc. Latin Jazz as well as some of Hernando County’s fabulous high school jazz bands.
All funds raised during the festival benefit art organizations of Hernando County through grants that are awarded annually as well as through several new initiatives including the Artists in our Schools residency program to be launched during the coming year.
For more information about the event, contact Mary Jane Russell at the Hernando County Fine Arts Council, (352) 754-4788 or visit www.hernandoarts.org.

DISCOUNTED ART SUPPLIES
Hi, my name is Ben Mahmoud (see http://benmahmoud.com).
I have been diagnosed with a disorder that prevents me from painting.
I have on hand a great deal of art materials that your membership might
be interested in.
For example, I have two complete rolls of Utrecht medium smooth cotton
duck canvas. It is 72: x 10 yards. I will sell them for $80 a roll.
In addition, I have many unopened jars of Utrecht acrylic paint. I will
sell them for less than Utrecht's prices.
I would deeply appreciate it if you could put something in your
newsletter to your membership letting them know of the availability of
these items (and many more).
If you can do this, my address is 6502 Summerfield Loop, N.P.R. (but
really in the Trinity area). My telephone number is
727.376-2756.
Thank you very much for your attention to this small matter.
Sincerely, Ben Mahmoud

Thanks to all who opened their hearts and wallets.
Esther, Isabelle, Paul and I (Lynne) attended an open house at the new temporary studios donated by the city of Dunedin Friday evening, the 1st of Feb. It was an amazing few hours filled with all kinds of creative people...we met the owner of the burned out building and many of the artists who lost their life's work in that fire. The President of PAVA was there, as well as the President of the Miniature Society of Florida. They had a live jazz band, plenty of great food and drink and over one hundred people in attendance. The artists were overwhelmed and appreciative for all the support given by the community, which included the Tampa Bay area and cities all across Florida, as far North as Gainesville and Tallahassee. They were nice enough to mention that members of the Spring Hill Art League had made the drive for this event and were most generous hosts.
OUT OF THE ASHES....This photo is of a redwood sculpture that took the artist over one year to carve and finish. It was pulled from the ashes and stands in the corner of her temporary studio, charred and disfigured, ready to be resurrected.
In our conversation, I found that the artist, Dorothy Briccetti, was born in the very same hospital that I was in upstate new York and that we lived in the same town for quite a few years. It really is a small world! My heart goes out to her as she begins her emotional journey to recovery at the tender age of 80!
